This project was developed as part of my coursework at Hyper Island, a leading media and communications school. The task was to create an illustrative book cover, and I chose to design a visually appealing coffee table book centered around the iconic Porsche brand.
Inspired by the timeless appeal of Porsche, particularly the legendary 911 model, I aimed to capture the brand's essence through a clean, minimalist design. The graphic language of the book is influenced by vintage Nike advertisements, known for their bold typography and witty messaging. This inspiration is evident in the playful yet confident tagline: "Who needs a therapist when you can have a Porsche?"
The book, titled "The History of Porsche," is designed not just as a decorative piece but as a visual narrative that traces the evolution of one of the world's most iconic cars. The title and imagery are closely intertwined; the front cover showcases a side profile of a classic Porsche 911, while the back cover features rear and front views of both an older and a newer 911 model. This deliberate choice of imagery connects directly to the title, illustrating the progression and enduring legacy of the 911 across different eras. The juxtaposition of these models visually encapsulates the rich history that the book title suggests, making it clear that the book delves into the heritage and ongoing story of the Porsche 911.
The simplicity of the green illustrations against the white background creates a striking contrast, enhancing the visual appeal and making the book an eye-catching addition to any coffee table.
The typography plays a crucial role in tying the design to Porsche’s brand identity. I selected fonts that convey a sense of timeless elegance and precision, qualities that resonate with the Porsche brand. The serif typeface used for the title and tagline exudes a classic yet modern feel, reflecting the enduring nature of Porsche’s design philosophy. This careful selection of fonts ensures that the text complements the imagery, reinforcing the book’s theme of historical continuity.
The design was brought to life using Adobe Illustrator. The process involved experimenting with different visual layouts and refining the illustrations to achieve a balance between modern minimalism and vintage charm. The choice of a minimal color palette was intentional, aimed at creating a design that is both sophisticated and visually accessible. The final product seamlessly integrates these elements to reflect the essence of Porsche—understated yet unmistakably powerful.
This was a solo project where I was responsible for the entire creative process—from conceptualization to execution. The final design successfully combines modern minimalism with a nod to classic advertising, resulting in a book cover that is both stylish and evocative of Porsche's storied history.
